S1:Episode 4 Part 2 - Life or Death: Chakra Control Training, Part 1

The next morning, the team meets Arashi at the War Memorial and note that he actually showed up on time. “Alright, well, we’re going to go somewhere else to train because—” he thinks for a second, “Well, just come on.” He leads the squad to the Forbidden Forest area of the village. This tactical piece of land is chocked full of traps which are triggered by people simply having large amounts of chakra. Arashi deftly slides past the “Do not enter” tape and leads them deep into the forest. When they reach a particularly dense part of the forest, he stops, “Alright, so today you’ll be climbing up trees.” He goes over to a tree and walks up it effortlessly; when he reaches the top, he places a piece of paper with a seal on it. He does the same with two other trees. When he returns to the ground, he attempts to put corresponding seals onto his students; Yasei and Suzume allow it, but Kai adamantly refuses, much to Arashi’s consternation. “Fine, don’t then. For you two, those,” he points to the tags on Yasei and Suzume’s backs, “are explosive tags. They’re going to explode in three hours unless you activate the dispel seal up there,” he gestures to the tree seals. He pulls out a notebook and begins trailing away writing in it, “Alright, good luck.”

Yasei and Suzume look at each other in terror and begin to try and climb in earnest. Typically, they fail utterly. After about twenty minutes of attempts with moderate success, Yasei notices that the seals appear to be expiring at a rate faster than three hours. “Hey Arashi?” “Uh yeah?” he responds, barely interested. “These seals are burning up pretty quickly…are you sure we have three hours?” Arashi pauses and looks up from his notebook, “Oh, I forgot. I set those for thirty minutes instead of three hours.” He glances over at the tags, “You guys should probably hurry.” Yasei and Suzume redouble their efforts and get much further with the impetus of death closing in. With two minutes to spare, they all are able to successfully walk on the trees. However, when they go to activate the dispel seal, it only begins to sizzle faster…only to fizzle into nothing.

Arashi gets up and stretches, “Well, good job on progressing so quickly! I knew you had it in you.” As his squad members stare at him incredulously he lets out a quick laugh, which none of them had ever seen him do before, “Here, since you guys were such good sports, I’ll treat you to lunch.” He leads them to a barbecue restaurant which appears to be a hotspot for sensei’s taking their squads to lunch today. Suzume waves at Inazuma, Umi and Yukai (her friends from the orphanage) who are sitting with their goggled instructor a few tables away. As they proceed into the restaurant, they pass by the resident monk and jonin (Group A-2 Sensei) Tao Kokaro and his group. When Tao sees them, he stands up abruptly, “Oh. Uh…hey,” he says to Arashi. “…Hey.” Arashi looks clearly uncomfortable, but Tao appears to notice nothing, “So they gave you some kids, huh? How’s that going?” “Uh, pretty good. They learned how to climb trees.” Tao nods sagely and Arashi begins to slide past him. “I’ll uh…see you around?” Tao calls after him. Arashi waves awkwardly and sits down at a table. Kai looks almost amused, “Well that was awkward.” Arashi rubs his head, “Yeah…” and leaves it at that.

They proceed to order a whole ton of barbecue since they were starving after the training montage. As they settle in to eat, they hear sniggering from another table. Another classmate turned genin, Aki Waru, stares pointedly at Yasei with a sneer on her face. “Honestly,” she complains loudly to her group, “they shouldn’t allow strays in public places. Disgusting.” Yasei clenches her fists and looks down at the table; the fact that she is not an official member of the Shattered Sky’s Hyuga clan had been a means for people to talk down to her for years. Kai puts down his chopsticks and turns in his chair to face Aki, “If you keep talking about Yasei like that, I’ll thrash you,” he declares. Aki stands up abruptly, “Then fight me already!”

There is a blur of movement and suddenly Arashi has disappeared from the table; he now stands directly in front of Aki with his palm resting on her face. And he is surrounded by six ANBU ninja poised to strike and one standing directly next to him, with a hand on his arm.

S1:Episode 4 - Squad Five, Flawless Formation!

Arashi makes a hand seal and produces a glass of water. “Alright,” he puts the glass on his head, “make me spill a drop of this water.” Squad Five looks at each other and uncertainly enter attack stances. Arashi looks over them critically, “If you don’t come after me with the intent to kill, you won’t succeed.” Emboldened, Yasei activates her Byakugan and is taken aback by what she sees. Her sensei has absolutely no chakra in his chakra circulatory system, a phenomenon typically only found in corpses. “…guys? This guy doesn’t have any chakra,” she calls out nervously. “That’s impossible,” Kai scoffs while activating his Sharingan. Suddenly, Arashi is in front of Yasei, “What are you looking at?” he says before pushing her backwards.

Kai, Suzume and Yasei all attempt to land hits on Arashi with Taijutsu, Kenjusu and Ninjutsu, but he avoid them with ease and a bored expression on his face. Kai, intensely frustrated by their lack of progress, suddenly recalls one of Arashi’s weaknesses…and takes off the golden ring. Arashi doubles over for a second to catch his breath and Kai attempts to kick him in the loins. Arashi quickly catches catches Kai’s foot, glares at him and throws him into a charging Yasei. A battle ensues where everybody tries to hit Arashi while he avoids all attacks. Kai, with a spark of inspiration, removes his ring. Arashi instantly appears weaker and then Kai attempts to kick him in the loins to which Arashi responds by angrily throws him into Yasei. Noticing the effect on Arashi, Yasei also removes her ring, causing Arashi to become even more sluggish. As Suzume takes off her ring, Arashi throws down a bomb, enveloping both himself and his squad members in smoke.

Kai takes this opportunity of lacking sight to hengei into Yasei to hopefully throw Arashi off. Arashi attacks the hengei’d Kai, who deftly avoids the attack. Yasei, being nearby, attacks Arashi while he’s distracted and surprisingly lands a hit. However, as soon as her sword makes contact, there is a puff of smoke and Arashi turns into the familiar black wolf, Tyrell Williams with a sheepish expression on his face. Multiple Arashi’s begin to pour into the area to attack, but are easily hit; in the end, all of the Arashi’s turn into very bemused wolves. When Suzume finally uses a mud wave technique to clear the smoke, the team notices Arashi asleep on the ground with the water spilled around him. Yasei and Kai put the rings back on as the wolves begin to disappear. Arashi blinks his eyes wearily and sees the spilled glass of water next to him. He stands up, “Well fuck, you guys pass. So…normal ninja training will happen tomorrow morning,” he rubs the back of his head, “I’ll show up this time, so be there. That’s all.”

The squad agrees to meet back in the morning. Kai returns home to wildly exaggerate his exploits to his excitable younger brother while Yasei excitedly recounts her progress to her exhausted caretaker Tsuru and Suzume returns to the orphanage.

S1:Episode 3 Part 2 - Make or Break: Teamwork

Yasei and Suzume arrive at the war memorial at sunrise. Yasei looks over at the rising sun, “He said morning, right?” Suzume searches the empty horizon, “I’m sure they’ll be here soon.” The two of them take a seat beneath the trees and wait with increasing frustration. Meanwhile, Kai wakes up at noon to find that Ishiru was not around to make lunch. He yawns and goes to get some ramen for brunch at the local ramen shop. The eccentric one-armed ramen shop owner, Raiku Totoro, greets Kai enthusiastically at the door, “Ah! Kai! The usual?” “Of course,” Kai says, taking a seat at the bar. Raiku whips out a wok and begins to feverishly make ramen; after a few minutes of sizzling, he sets the wok onto the stovetop and shoots the ramen with lightning, REAL LIGHTNING.

“Didn’t you graduate yesterday, Kai?” Raiku asks while shooting continual bolts of lightning into the ramen, “I would’ve thought you’d be off training.” “Eh, well the guy I got assigned to didn’t seem into it, so I assumed he wouldn’t show up anyway.” Kai shrugs. Raiku sets the bowl of ramen down in front of Kai who begins to eat it with enthusiasm; the lightning always makes it taste better. Raiku looks concerned, “That doesn’t sound right, who was assigned as your sensei?” “Oh, some guy called Arashi Totoro.” Raiku looks at him for a moment and sighs, “I’ll be right back.” He walks towards the back, grumbling, “He never tells me anything,” under his breath. He returns about five minutes later dragging a half-asleep Arashi along with him. Kai suddenly realizes that Arashi and Raiku share both a last name and very similar appearances; he quietly decides to claim that he always knew they were father and son.

Raiku dumps Arashi onto the seat next to Kai and begins to make another bowl of ramen. Arashi’s gaze lolls over to Kai, “What are you doing here?” “Well, I’m getting lunch. The other two are probably waiting for you at the War Memorial.” “…shit,” Arashi sighs. Raiku sets down another bowl of ramen, “You’d better get going after this, Arashi.” Arashi reluctantly eats his bowl of ramen and heads out with Kai as Raiku watches with a smile. At the war memorial, an impatient Suume and Yasei have been waiting on their sensei and squadmate for four hours. When they finally do arrive, Suzume, too afraid of her sensei to call him out, directs her frustration onto Kai, “Where were you?” “Oh, we were just getting lunch,” Kai says. Suzume and Yasei simmer while Arashi speaks up.

“See this Memorial?” he points towards the huge obelisk behind him. Squad Five nods. “Memorize all of the names on it and then I’ll train you.” Squad Five looks over the Memorial; there are roughly 250 names etched into the obelisk. “Alright, bye then.” Arashi starts walking back the way he came. Each eager to train, all members of Squad Five immediately begin to try and memorize the names on their own. Suzume attempts to etch the names onto a piece of paper while Kai activates his Sharingan and attempts to memorize them all; Yasei takes out a piece of paper and begins to feverishly write them down. By the end of the day, none of them have made much progress.

When they return the next day, they decide the collaborate and come up with a plan to create five individual raps containing the names which they would all recite together. After three days of memorization, they were ready. Kai sprints over to the ramen shop and asks Raiku to get Arashi. He stumbles out of the back room, “What?” “We’ve memorized the names on the Memorial.” “Ah…fine.” He follows Kai back to the War Memorial and sits down expectantly. The Squad performs the rap flawlessly with great enthusiasm; when they finish, they realize that Arashi had fallen asleep during. Yasei hesitantly pokes him awake and he stirs. He stands up and begins rifling through his pockets, “Good job. I would never train anyone who wasn’t smart enough to work together.” He holds out an outstretched hand where he’s holding three golden rings, “Here, put these on.”

Once the rings are on, all three of them feel a slight tug on their level of chakra. Suddenly, Arashi’s eyes brighten and he seems visibly more energetic. He stretches out his arms and legs before letting out a satisfied sign, “Right. Now we can begin our training.” Yasei and Suzume look at each other and grin excitedly and even the usually-stoic Kai cannot help but crack a smile.

S1: Episode 3 - Squad Five, Formation!

Later that evening, the families and friends of the academy graduates gather around the academy’s stage to watch the headband ceremony. Kyo cheers excitedly when Kai receives his headband and practically the entire orphanage throws confetti into the air when Suzume crosses the stage. Yasei looks around at the crowd to see that Tsuru was unable to attend the ceremony; undoubtedly, he got held up teaching at the dojo. After awhile, the headband ceremony passes without incident and Dave gets up on stage and to call out the groups and senseis.

Slowly, their classmates are divided into four other squads and each is given a jounin sensei from the village. Kai notices that many of the teaching-material jounin have already been assigned and wonders who will take charge of his squad. After Inazuma, Umi and Yukai walk off with a jounin sporting goggles, Dave carries on, “Kai Uchiha, Suzume and Yasei Hyuga,” Each stands up. “You three will be Squad Five. Your sensei will be Arashi Totoro.” Suzume starts when Dave mentions the name; if she recalled properly, Arashi Totoro was an imprisoned war criminal, not a jounin of the Shattered Sky! The three genin look around expectantly for their new sensei, but no one comes forward. With the final group assigned, ceremony spectators begin to disperse and Dave looks around slightly agitated, “He was told the time and place! Where could he possibly be—“

Suddenly, there is a huge puff of smoke on the stage and a large black wolf sits towards the edge. Kai, Suzume and Yasei grimace as smoke that smells strongly of skunk pours towards them. “Now uh, no need to freak, man, I made it,” the wolf says in a strange voice; it appears to be wavering between unnaturally high and low-pitched. Dave looks at the wolf, “Excuse me?” “I’m, uh, Arashi. Arashi Totoro, fo real, man.” Yasei stares at the wolf, “How can a wolf be our sensei?” Suzume comes to stand next to her, “Yeah, and isn’t Arashi a convict or something? Why would the Shattered Sky arrest a wolf?” The wolf, if it could sweat, appears to be sweating bullets, “Yo man, uh…” he reaches into a bag tied around his neck and pulls out some leafy substance with his teeth, “…you guys want some reefer?” Dave looks exasperated, “Where is Arashi?” The wolf pauses, “Hold on, man,” and disappears into a cloud of skunk smoke.

Yasei turns to Dave, “What’s reefer?” Dave coughs and ignores the question. After a minute, the wolf appears again, “Okay man, its all worked out. So, how bout that reefer, man?” Dave is starting to get quite angry, “Where is Arashi? If he thinks he can just skip this opportunity after everything Saigo has done for him—“ “Calm down already,” a voice appears from the side of the stage and an unshaven man that looks to be his 30’s walks towards the group, “I’m here.” With his arrival, the wolf disappears once again into a cloud of smoke. “Right…” the man rubs his head and turns to face the group of genin, “…I’m your sensei, I guess. Arashi Totoro.” The genin look at him with suspicion.

Arashi-sensei.jpg

Surely this tired-looking, lazy man couldn’t be the war criminal they’d heard about? Before they have much time to consider this, Arashi speaks up again, “You’re all to meet me at the War Memorial tomorrow morning. That will be all.” He looks at Dave expectantly, “Are we good now?” Dave nods reluctantly and Arashi slouches off in the direction he came. Kai, Suzume and Yasei all share confused looks before returning home for the day.

S1: Episode 2 - The Ultimate Test: A Kage's Approval

When Yasei arrives at the academy, mostly everybody is already there. Kai sits at the top row of seats, snoozing on the desk, while Suzume and the other students talk amongst themselves. As Yasei goes to sit in the corner, another a Hyuga sniggers and whispers something behind her hand to a friend. Yasei clenches her hands together and stares out of the window determinedly. The sensei, Dave, walks into the classroom carrying a stack of papers and motions for everybody to settle down. “I certainly hope you’ve all studied! This test will determine whether or not you posses the knowledge and skills to become a ninja for the Shattered Sky village. It will consist of both written and practical examinations, one of which will be performed in front of the Kage himself,” he looks around the room, “so I expect you will all be on your best behavior.” He walks around passing out a packet of questions to each student and returns to the front of the room. He looks over at the clock, “You may now begin.” The exam includes a variety of questions ranging from religion and ninja lore to the tactical know-how of throwing kunai.

The students are given two hours to complete the written exam and then an hour for lunch. Towards the end of lunch, the exam scores are posted. One perfect score goes to one of Suzume’s friends, Inazuma, a renowned tactical genius. Closely following are Sutomu Totoro and Kai Uchiha. The rest of the scores are significantly lower with Suzume towards the middle and Yasei almost in last place.

Dave supervises the three practicums which tests skill with the Duplication Technique, kunai-throwing and Ninjutsu, Genjutsu and Taijutsu respectively. Kai, Suzume and Yasei all excel in the practicums with Kai being especially good at Genjutsu, Suzume with Ninjutsu and Yasei with Taijutsu. Afterwards, Dave brings them one by one into the academy stadium where the Kage, Saigo Uchiha, and the Village Council is gathered. There, the students perform the Substitution Jutsu in front of them. Suzume and Yasei pass well enough, but as Kai enters the stadium, the Village Council shifts in agitation; there had been much talk among them that the Kage’s son received special treatment in the academy. Kai waits patiently for the mark to begin when the Kage suddenly stands.

Saigo_Uchiha.jpg

Saigo reaches into his pockets and throws a kunai towards Kai at full speed. The kunai lodges itself in Kai’s forehead with a thunk, but he immediately turns into a large log. From the shadowy corner of the room, the real Kai steps into the light with his hands in his pockets, looking at the Council expectantly. Saigo nods approvingly and sits back in his chair while the Council reels and Kai walks away.

With the Substitution exam completed, the students had nothing left to do but wait for the final scores to be posted. Kai resumes his slumber on the desk and Suzume talks nervously with her orphanage friends. Yasei stares out of the window, worried that her written score will prevent her from passing. After about an hour, Dave enters the room and posts the scores on the wall. Kai, Suzume and Yasei have all passed! All of the passing students are told that the headband ceremony will take place this evening on the outside stage; it will be then when groups and senseis are assigned!

S1: Episode 1 - The Ultimate Test: A Bright Day Under the Shattered Sky

The morning begins like any other for Suzume of the Shattered Sky village.

Suzume.jpg

She carefully pulls back her red hair into a ponytail and readjusts her ninja tool pack, checking for the third time whether or not she had remembered her shiruken. As she looks into her small mirror, she smiles reassuringly at the nervous girl looking back at her and exits the room. Outside, the orphanage is in an absolute uproar. Brightly-colored banners and streamers line every inch of the walls and mountains of breakfast porridge are being steadily brought out from the kitchen by young children. A man with long brown hair and a scar across his face carries a large pot out of the kitchen with difficulty as children cling to his legs.

Ku.png

“Suzume!” he says, spotting her and smiling, “Sit, sit! A good breakfast will help you pass the exams!” Suzume smiles and sits to enjoy the breakfast Ku has prepared; while it is plain, it is unmistakably made with love. After finishing, she offers to help Ku clean up, but he insists that she get going, lest she be late for her exams. The children crowd around the door, wishing the students taking exams today good luck and cheering. Suzume gives them all highfives as she and three other orphans, Inazuma, Umi, and Yukai, head over to the academy; above them, a constant auora shimmers in the village sky.

Meanwhile, in the Uchiha district, sun begins to shine into the windows of the most elaborate house in the area. Upstairs, a man dressed in full samurai armor and an apron bursts through a door into a darkened bedroom, “Kai!” he yells, ripping the curtains from the window. Light floods into the room and a young boy with dark hair groans, clutching a pillow to his head. The armored man walks over to the bed and pulls off the pillow, “Kai, wake up! You’re going to be late!” Kai groans again, “What does it matter?” “Why,” the man puffs up indignantly, “you are the son of the Kage! You cannot simply skip the academy’s graduation exams! It would bring much dishonor upon your father-eru!” Kai swings himself to sit up and yawns, “The academy is a load of garbage trash, Ishiru. It didn’t teach me anything I didn’t already know.” While Ishiru protests again, Kai gets to his feet and pulls on a black t-shirt and shoes.

My_naruto_character.jpg

As Kai begins to walk downstairs, he bumps into his hyperactive younger brother waiting outside of his door, holding a plate of breakfast food. His face lights up when he sees Kai and he holds up the plate, “Kai! Ishiru made breakfast! Are you going to school now? Are you going to be late? When you get back, can you teach me a jutsu?” Kai smiles and pats him on the head, grabbing a piece of toast with his other hand as he continues walking downstairs, “Yes, yes and yes. See you, Kyo.” Kyo whoops, dropping the plate in his excitement. Kai waves as he walks outside eating the toast as Ishiru off-handedly scolds Kyo while cleaning up the remnants of breakfast.

In the slums of the Lantern District, the streets are already bustling with vendors calling out wares to passerbys. Within a particularly decrepit apartment complex, a young girl with pale eyes finishes pulling her white hair into a ponytail and sheathes two worn wakazashi swords onto her ninja belt.

Yaseiiiiiii_with_better_eyes.jpg

Behind her, a twenty year old Hyuga sits at the table (there is only one room) and finishes drinking his tea.

Tsuruuuuuuu.jpg

The girl turns around and gives two thumbs up, grinning ear-to-ear, “Yasei Hyuga, ready to become a ninja of the Shattered Sky!” The man smiles slightly, “You’d better eat your breakfast quickly or you’ll be late,” Yasei glances out of the window and jumps, “Oh no!” She wolfs down a bowl of porridge and a cup of tea in what must be record time. The man gets up to gather a sword and a bag, “Alright, I’ll see you tonight once I finish up at work. Good luck today!” Yasei runs over and gives him a hug before barging out of the room, going straight though the paper door, “Bye Tsuru!” she yells. Tsuru looks over at the hole in the door, which appears to have been mended multiple times, and sighs heavily as an oblivious Yasei clamors down the rickety stairwell.

Episode 0 - Genesis
Pre-Game Post

Long ago in a time of strife and waring clans there existed only one truth, death. This was a time when warriors fought massive wars for land and virtually every stone was soaked in blood. The battles had become so prevalent that children were born just so they could be raised to die on the front lines.

It was in this time of bloodshed a god was born amoungst men. It is said that when he was born he fell from his midwife’s hands, stood up on two legs, and said “I am Bishimonten, and I shall purge the world of its greatest affliction!”

Bishimonten was said to have grown to a full man in a single week and raised a great army to stand behind him. He wielded a great spear in one hand and held a mysterious Pagoda in the other (this was rumored to be the source of his power). It was said that when he steped onto the battlefield the elements would bend to his commands and the very souls of his enemies would shake in fear. He could fell an entire flank of an army with a single swing of his great spear, Vessavana.

He quickly conquered any land he attempeted to lay dominion over and continued to claim that he would rid the world of its “greatest affliction”, many assumed this affliction was war. But when he was asked by a monk of his order what this affliction was he replied “humanity”.

Once the other clans heard his desires they became panics and quickly rallied behind the three strongest clans. The Uchiha, the Kaguya, and the Zetsubo. These great clan leaders wielded three legendary weapons forged by the Gods themselves. A great sundering sword with nine rings of power, a mantle with five jewels of wisdom the bestowed its wearer magical powers and a ringed staff that protected its wielder from all harm.

These clan leaders led the remainder of all the humans against the great warrior god and defeated him and his twisted demonic soldiers.

After Bishimonten was defeated he promised each of the heros a gift from his pagoda, the source of his power. The Zetsubo clan leader was the first to speak; he asked of Bishimonten his power! “As you wish” he said and so it was. The Zetsubo’s arms turned jet black and pained him as he could feel the infinite power of the elements passing through them and he could no longer hold the ones he loved without ripping their very souls from their bodies. The secound to speak was the Uchiha, thinking himself a wise man he asked of Bishimonten his insight. “Your wish is my command” he spoke and so it was. The Uchiha’s eyes changed and a thrid opened upon his brow, he gained perfect insight into the world but could no longer be blissfully ignorant or happy again. The final hero, the Kaguya hessitantly asked Bishimonten for his great resiliant form and health. “As you say” he nodded and so it was. The Kaguya’s body become as hard as stone and his bones like the strongest iron. But he could no longer move himself, his body was too powerful and unmoving the walk and thus was doomed to spend the rest of his immortal life as an unmoving ruler of the Kaguya.

With the three warrior’s wishes granted he layed on the ground with no arms, eyes, or bones and looked beaten and broken. He looked at the heros and said, “with these gifts I curse you forever as, Shinobi” and with that his body was imersed in light and turned to dust. the warriors then hid the great pagoda and Bishimonten’s spear Vessavana away so no future generations could make the same mistakes they had made.
